When I was a Junior in college we were required to attend AIGA’s Portfolio 1 on 1. I had finished all of my design classes early and I thought I was doing pretty damn good. The day of Portfolio 1 on 1 I got all of my projects together and headed over to the convention center. That was back when everything was mounted on black matte board – back before iPads. I sat down for my first interview with some hot shot from CSA. He tore my book apart. Half of my work he told me to eliminate and the rest of it he told me to re-do. This was back before I developed thick skin and I was crushed. I got up and left with out going to anymore interviews. Looking back, that brutal critique is the reason I have a job now. I took my senior year very seriously and redesigned every piece in my portfolio. I hardly slept, and it was totally worth it. When I did go on my first interview, I got the job.

This year not only will I be reviewing books, but I’ll be a speaker on Friday’s panel. Stop by and grill me with some good questions, but don’t be too mean or I might leave early.

Students, go register here. Professionals with 3 years experience, email portfolio1on1@aigaminnesota.org to review books. It always feels good to give back. Afterwords, lets go grab some drinks. Cheers!
